At I Demand Access (IDA), we believe that access opens doors, to education, to empowerment, and to joy. In partnership with OTK in Malawi, one of our cornerstone initiatives this year is the construction of a community soccer field, a space where children can play, express themselves, and build confidence through sports. This soccer field will serve not just as a recreational outlet, but as a space for empowerment, especially for girls, at a time when interest in women’s sports is rapidly growing and more girls are stepping onto the field, inspired to play, compete, and lead.
This project is made possible thanks to the generous support of two long-time IDA volunteers and a passionate new donor: a high school student who was moved by our mission and inspired to help. Through a personal connection to one of our volunteers, this student learned about IDA’s work and felt drawn to the soccer field initiative.
“Sports have always been a passion of mine,” he shared in a recent interview. “When I heard about the soccer field project, it immediately resonated with me, especially the opportunity it creates for girls to participate and express themselves through sports.”
His interest goes far beyond a financial contribution. Alongside his donation, he is actively collaborating with sports experts to ensure the long-term success of the field. He’s researching best practices for maintenance during Malawi’s rainy season, including irrigation systems and sustainable materials to help ensure that the field is functional and safe for years to come.
“I think sports have the power to bring people together,” he says. “It’s about more than just playing, it’s about building community, confidence, and opportunity.”
Looking ahead, he also expressed interest in supporting other IDA efforts that promote gender equality and amplify female voices. His enthusiasm, hands-on involvement, and generosity remind us of the incredible potential in young leaders and how far a single idea can go when fueled by purpose.
With construction underway, this field represents more than just a game. It’s a testament to what’s possible when passion, community, and opportunity come together, and it’s only just the beginning.
A heartfelt thank you to our three incredible supporters, our two dedicated I Demand Access volunteers and our new partner, whose generosity and commitment have made this vision a reality. Your belief in the power of sports to build community and create opportunity has laid the foundation for positive and lasting change in Malawi.
